Paper Mache Ideas for Kids: Turtles

The giant turtles of Hoan Kiem Lake are very shy which makes them really hard to find.
But with a little bit of imagination, a little bit of mess and a lot of fun you can create your very own with this fun kids craft.

Get yourself the following items:

  • A mixing bowl
  • Cling film
  • Cardboard
  • Newspaper
  • Sticky tape
  • Flour

Using water soluble paints and brushes, you can make your giant turtle
as unique as you are.

  1. Start by mixing the flour with water to make the glue.
  2. Then tear up some newspaper
into small pieces.
  3. Cover the outside of the bowl with cling film and paper mache the outside by covering the strips of newspaper in glue and sticking them on to the cling film.
  4. Things could get a bit messy, but that’s half the fun! Add extra layers so that your turtle’s shell is nice and strong.
  5. For the head, crumple up a small piece of newspaper and squash it into an oval shape. Remember turtles don’t have round heads.
  6. When the glue is dry and the paper mache is hard, remove the shell from the bowl.
  7. Now it’s time to make the feet. Cut four feet shapes out of the cardboard and stick the feet and head onto the shell.

Your turtle’s just about ready. Make your turtle as bright and colourful as you like by mixing and matching your favourite colours.
