About 12 eggshells, saved after cooking and rinsed clean
Acrylic paint and brushes
Thick paper or card
Strong sticky tape to hang the mosaics
Glue
Crayons or coloured pencils
Old newspaper to cover the workspace
What to do
Get Ready:
To get kids thinking about their designs, ask them to look around the house and find things that could be changed to be better for the environment. Has someone forgotten to turn the taps off? Has anyone left the TV on? How can the family be more eco-friendly?
Have a go:
On a newspaper-covered flat surface, kids can get painting the eggshells in a rainbow of colours.
Once the eggshells are painted, they can be set aside for a while in a warm place to dry.
When they’re completely dry, kids will need to break them up into small pieces to make the coloured tiles they’ll use to create their mosaics.
Try it out:
On the thick paper, kids should sketch out symbols and pictures to illustrate the reminder messages they’ll need. What about a recycling symbol for the fridge door, or a teardrop to hang above the dripping tap?
Then, using tiny dabs of glue, kids should attach their eggshell tiles to the drawings to create colourful mosaic signs.
Lay the mosaics out flat in a warm dry place, or outside in the sunshine, so the glue can set.
