We all know that mums often have to multi-task – and dads are amazing at juggling family life, too. There’s no better time for kids to celebrate how unique and special their dad is than Father’s Day! This year, Father’s Day is Sunday 15 June. Creating handmade Father’s Day cards is a fun artistic activity for kids, and a great way to let Dad know how much he’s appreciated. Some ideas for Father’s Day cards

Help your kids create thoughtful cards by asking them about what their dad is like: What are his hobbies? What activities do they like to do together? What are his favourite belongings? Kids can use the answers to all these questions as inspiration for their cards – a personalised design is always going to make more of an impact than any shop-bought Father’s Day card. Here are a few other suggestions for Father’s Day card themes:

  • A card based on his favourite hobbies: Does their dad like cycling, reading, fishing, cooking, or bowling? Those all make good themes – and it’s always best to make sure that the card reflects their dad’s favourite hobbies and interests.
  • For scientifically-minded dads, try a card with a robot, space, or gadget theme.
  • For adventurous dads, perhaps an outdoorsy motif with mountains, trees, or the sea.
  • What sports teams does he support? A card with the team colours or featuring his team’s badge might be fun!
  • Try making a card based on his favourite TV programs or films: Is their Dad a Jedi Knight or Darth Vader?
  • Superhero designs like the one below are a fun way to make hard-working dads feel appreciated: “You’re my Hero, Dad”.
  • Is he the “World’s No.1 Dad”? Try making a trophy, medal, or prize-themed card.
  • Finally, a hand-drawn portrait or photo collage is a great way to make any card feel more personal.

How to Make a Super Hero ‘Window’ Card for Father’s Day

This creative Father’s Day card lets kids turn their Dad into an actual super hero! This handmade card is a lot of fun to make, but children also love a bit of mess – so be ready to make good use of Persil’s easy stain removal tips if any pen or glue ends up somewhere it shouldn’t.

You will need:

  • Thick paper or card stock
  • A photo (front-facing) of their Dad – it’s best to print a copy of one off, rather than using a beloved original.
  • Colouring pens
  • Pencils, or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to Make It:

  1. Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half from left to right to make a basic card shape.
  2. On the front of the card, draw the outline of a superhero, cape and all, with a face roughly the same size as their dad’s head in the photograph. If your kids are very small, you might like to sketch in the head yourself and let them use their imaginations to create a body!
  3. Use the scissors to cut the face of the super hero out of the middle of the card to create an oval window. Younger kids may need a little help with this part.
  4. Position the picture of your Dad inside the card, so that his face shows through the oval window in the front of the card. Splodge a little bit of glue in each of the corners to keep the picture in place.
  5. Now your kids can colour in and decorate the Super Dad figure on the front of the card. They could also write a message like ‘My Super Dad’ or ‘My Hero’ to carry on the theme.
  6. Open the card, and draw a decorative frame around the picture. Write a Father’s Day message above and below.
  7. Your super hero card is complete!
