Summer is the best time for outdoor activities for kids and families. Exploring and learning from nature is one of our biggest influences when we grow up. Nature walks make for a fun family activity where you and your little ones can explore the beauty existing around you. With the fresh air, enticing smells of nature and different animals, there is truly so much that our little ones can learn from nature and the wildlife existing in it.
Here are a few lovely places to take your family on an outing, in nature.
Cape Town: The Company Gardens
This history-rich botanical garden lies in the heart of Cape Town and boasts a rose garden, Japanese garden, fish pond and bird aviary. The ancient oak trees are home to squirrels and all kinds of Cape birds. Situated next to the planetarium, the South African Museum, and the South African National Gallery, it really is a fun family day for all.
Durban: Umgeni River Bird Park
Built by Dr Alan Abrey and situated in an old quarry site, the Umgeni River Bird Park features more than 800 birds from 200 species. One of the highlights of the park is the free-flight bird show which features beautiful birds of all shapes, sizes and colours. Learn some interesting fun facts about one of our planet’s oldest species and quiz your little ones when you get home to find out how well they listened and what they learned.
Johannesburg: Emmarentia Dam
The Dam and the surrounding gardens is a great place to explore the green and blue beauty that exists in this city. Feed the ducks and their ducklings as they flit and flap around the dam or bring along a blanket and pillows for a picnic under the shady trees. Or you could simply take a walk around the dam and enjoy this lovely little spot for some family bonding outdoors.
