Summer is the best time for outdoor activities for kids and
families. Exploring and learning from nature is one of our biggest influences
when we grow up. Nature walks make for a fun family activity where you and your
little ones can explore the beauty existing around you. With the fresh air,
enticing smells of nature and different animals, there is truly so much that
our little ones can learn from nature and the wildlife existing in it.
Here are a few lovely places to take your family on an
outing, in nature.
Cape Town: The Company Gardens
This history-rich botanical garden lies in the heart of Cape
Town and boasts a rose garden, Japanese garden, fish pond and bird aviary. The
ancient oak trees are home to squirrels and all kinds of Cape birds. Situated
next to the planetarium, the South African Museum, and the South African
National Gallery, it really is a fun family day for all.
Durban: Umgeni River Bird Park
Built by Dr Alan Abrey and situated in an old quarry site,
the Umgeni River Bird Park features more than 800 birds from 200 species. One
of the highlights of the park is the free-flight bird show which features
beautiful birds of all shapes, sizes and colours. Learn some interesting fun
facts about one of our planet’s oldest species and quiz your little ones when
you get home to find out how well they listened and what they learned.
Johannesburg: Emmarentia Dam
The Dam and the surrounding gardens is a great
place to explore the green and blue beauty that exists in this city. Feed the
ducks and their ducklings as they flit and flap around the dam or bring along a
blanket and pillows for a picnic under the shady trees. Or you could simply
take a walk around the dam and enjoy this lovely little spot for some family
