Tejo in Colombia

Tejo is a traditional Colombian game using gunpowder – and explosively good fun! Watch a group of Colombian school children play their own version here.

Tejo is a traditional Colombian game and, since 2000, a national sport.

The target is a dirt-filled tray dotted with mechas of gunpowder. The aim is to throw a metal disc weighing around 2kg at the tray and make one of the mechas explode, causing dirt to fly in the air. Diana and Claudia made this film with school children from the town of Gachantivá, in the Colombian department (state) of Boyacá.

Rather than a metal disc and gunpowder the children use rocks and small fuses - a little less explosive but no less effective in getting dirt everywhere!
