How to Keep Whites White

There’s nothing more uplifting than bright white clothes and linen, but over time you’ll inevitably see some dullness or staining in even the most perfect whites. So how do you get yellow stains out of white shirts, or brighten up linen that has lost its sparkle? Luckily with the right laundry habits, keeping your whites fresh for longer and restoring them to their former brightness is easier tasks than you might think. Read on to find out how it’s done!

Keep the washing machine clean

If you’re wondering how to get stains out of white clothing, remember that prevention is always better than cure. For stain prevention, start by cleaning your washing machine. There’s no hiding from any lurking dirt in the washing machine – the chances that it will be transferred onto your sparkling whites are high! To avoid this, clean your washing machine every two months. You can find out how to do it here but you should always check the manufacturer’s instructions for recommended cleaning methods first.

Wash whites separately

Wash your white clothes separately from the rest of the laundry. Even if your coloured clothes have been washed lots of times, they may still transfer some dye, leaving your whites murky and grey. For the same reason, wash anything that is heavily soiled, like a muddy sports kit, separately from items that are less dirty. And if you’re worried about particular stains or gradual yellowing of white clothes? Well, the best way to get yellow stains out of white shirts is minimise the damage in the first place: wash white shirts or t-shirts after every wear to avoid the yellowing that is caused by perspiration or oils in the skin.

How to wash whites

Well-loved white clothes will see a stain or two at some point, and often they pick up yellow stains over time. But don’t worry, you can still get your hands dirty, even when you’re wearing your favourite whites. Follow these steps to find out how to get stains out of white clothing easily and effectively.

  1. Take a washing powder with stain removing and whitening agents, like OMO With A Touch of Comfort. Make a paste by mixing a small amount of water with a spoonful of the powder.
  2. Test the paste on a small, hidden area of the fabric first. If you don’t see any damage, apply the paste directly onto the stain.
  3. Leave your stain removing solution to work its magic overnight.
  4. Soak the item of clothing in a solution of the handwashing powder and water for one hour. Check the product label for dosage instructions beforehand, and always follow the washing advice on the garment care label.
  5. Wash the clothing in the washing machine, according to the instructions on the garment care tag, using a detergent that’s tough on stains like OMO Auto Liquid.
  6. Do not tumble dry or iron the item until you are sure that the stain has disappeared, as the heat will further set the stain. If the stain persists, or if the garment needs further brightening, simply repeat steps 4 and 5.

Your whites will stay white for much longer if you follow these easy steps. There’s no need to throw away your favourite white t-shirt just yet – a little extra care will keep it fresh and bright for years to come!
