How to Save Electricity at Home

Worried about damaging the environment or tired of expensive electricity bills? Save electricity at home and reduce your carbon footprint with OMO.

Electricity is essential to running a comfortable and happy home, but it comes at a cost to our wallets, and the environment. Because electricity is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions, which damage the environment, it's important that we do our bit and minimise the amount we use. Read on for easy ways to save electricity at home, without compromising on your home comforts!

Environmentally friendly laundry

One of the easiest and most effective ways of saving electricity at home is to your wash your clothes at 30˚C instead of 40˚C. Because this is kinder to both the environment and your clothes, we’ve developed OMO Ultra Capsules that are just as tough on stains at cool temperatures. The handy pre-measured dose means you get the perfect wash first time, without having to repeat.

Plus, they’re biodegradable. To finish off your planet-friendly wash, hang your clothes out to dry on the line instead of using the energy-hungry tumble dryer. Read more about ‘How to Green Your Laundry’ to find out more.

Energy-efficient temperature control

Before turning on the heating or the air conditioning, try regulating your temperature in energy-friendly ways. Put on a cosy pair of socks if it’s chilly. If it’s hot, try investing in a hand-held fan and you’ll be saving electricity in no time.

Alternatively, use an electric fan before turning on the air conditioning as they are up to 10 times more energy efficient. Another way you can reduce your use of heating and air conditioning is to make sure that your home is properly insulated. Double-glazed windows and good roof insulation can make all the difference, both to the environment and your bills!

Saving electricity in the kitchen

Did you know your fridge and freezer is one of the most energy-guzzling and expensive appliances in your household? This is because it needs to be on all the time. You may think that it is impossible to save electricity and still use this appliance, but you’d be wrong.

First, make sure that the door seals are shut tight and that there aren’t any gaps. If cool air is escaping, then your fridge is not working as efficiently as it should and using more energy than necessary. Next, make sure your fridge or freezer is set to the right temperatures (4-5˚C for the fridge and –15-18˚C for the freezer), to avoid wasting electricity by keeping it unnecessarily cold.

Teach your kids how to save electricity

One sure-fire way to keep your electricity usage to a minimum is to get the whole family on board. Teach them the importance of switching lights, televisions, radios and plugs off when they’re not in use. Think of common sources of electricity usage that might be easily overlooked by young kids and teens alike – such as mobile phones, computers, and game’s consoles. Leaving your phone plugged in after it has finished charging will continue to drain power from your supply so get your kids into good habits and save electricity.

You can even create a fun chart in the kitchen to track their process and encourage them to save electricity at home. Try putting our tips on how to save electricity into practice in your home and see how you can go green while reducing your bills.

As an added laundry tip, remember to use the best laundry detergent to get rid of stains and leave your clothes looking as good as new.
